  • All the Warmth in the World by the_eternal_optimist

Mulder follows Diana Fowley on a wild goose chase. Scully follows them. The three of them end up stuck together in a small, cramped room overnight . . . with only two beds. The other title of this fic is: I am unashamed of how much I love Fowley-induced angst. If you're into really great angst and a fic that won't leave you alone, don't miss this! It’s not often that I'm this obsessed with a story and literally think about it constantly. I was so overwhelmed after I finished reading. The_eternal_otimist took us on this crazy rollercoaster ride and I enjoyed every second of it. What a great way to have them finally get some much deserved happiness. I like that it wasn't all perfect in the end. They still have to deal with what happened but like Mulder said “We’ll go beyond the pain”. So beautiful! It's not often that I check and recheck my inbox to see if there's an update. I usually don't even read WIPs at all. But this fic... I just couldn't stop getting sucked deeper and deeper. archiveofourown.org/works/40664124

  • glass walls by skuls

Mulder and Scully imprisoned for an undetermined length of time in next door soundproof cells, separated by a pane of glass. They can see but not hear or touch each other. If you're looking for a darker fic that explores what might’ve happened if Mulder and Scully had been abducted together, then you'll like this fic. Mulder and Scully’s bond and support throughout is gut wrenching and beautiful ate the same time. This story takes the reader on an emotional rollercoaster. It explores how Mulder and Scully’s connection would hold up in a situation that was absolutely extreme: Mulder and Scully are abducted and imprisoned in adjacent, soundproof cells. They can only see each other through a glass wall that decides their cells, hence the title. We don't know much about who abducted them but the true focus of this fic is Mulder and Scully’s bond and how it helps them to survive. The way they communicate, not with words, but with their expressions and gestures, is heartbreaking and beautifully written. Skuls captures their connection wonderfully. But it's not just witnessing Mulder and Scully dealing with their situation that makes me like this fic so much. It's also the suspense and mystery that kept me wondering throughout the story how this could end. If you crave a darker, more intense plot with a strong bond between Mulder and Scully that can overcome nearly everything, this is the story for it. It's haunting and emotional and stayed with me long after I finished reading. archiveofourown.org/works/15353682

  • Rocket Man by bluesamutra

What happened to the man who suddenly got everything he ever wanted? What a ride and what an amazing story. Action-packed, full of angst and wonderful Mulder and Scully interactions and MSR. This fic has it all. I'm going to miss getting “new chapter” alerts for it. Bluesamutra knows how to hit just the right amount of angst to be painful but it is not to be completely irredeemable. I still wanted to slap Mulder or empty a bucket of ice water over his head from time to time but I won't ever give up on him. That wouldn't be Mulder. He was toeing the line though. I also loved the case! Horrible — but so intriguing. I was equally invested in finding out what happened with the murders, why Diana was working on the X-Files, and how the MSR could be fixed after those horrible words — and Mulder blowing chance after chance and thinking about Diana’s feelings. Can you tell I'm deeply invested? All I could think about was Scully in the hospital, what was happening with the case, and when would Mulder finally wake up and smell the coffee! I have no idea how bluesamutra did it but every time I thought it couldn't get better I was proven wrong. Mulder and Scully’s conversations had me reading open-mouthed. I loved everything about this fic: the angst, the plot and the case. archiveofourown.org/works/37554523

  • All the Dead Mulders by cecily_sass

He sees all of the very good reasons not to steal Scully’s car and drive to North Carolina that morning—he understands them perfectly and could articulate them if some one asked—but they’re so far away from him that he can’t touch them, much less feel them. He’s looking at them from miles above, like he never came back from orbit at all. You definitely don't want to miss reading this fic. If you've ever wanted to read more about what happened next after the events of "DeadAlive," then this is the fic for you. It's a compelling mix of sweetness, angst, tenderness, and heartbreak. It's so breathtakingly beautiful. Perfect. This story is an incredible portrayal of the evens following that episode and captures the attention of the reader right from the start. What was especially memorable to me was the way cecily_sass described those small spikes of emotion. From Mulder following every clue to each of them resonating within the emptiness inside of him. Cecily_sass explores Mulder and Scully's emotions around everything that has changed since Mulder's return from the dead. Especially their interactions, the way they dealt with the aftermath and how it all comes together in the end with a surprising twist and a surprise for Mulder, is what makes it particularly compelling. The way Mulder's journey is portrayed, his looking for answers and his frustration with all the changes, is both painful and rewarding. Both Mulder and Scully are in-character with their on-screen alter egos during that arc. I especially liked the pacing of this fic. It moves steadily through the different events, never drags, but still leaves room for letting emotions settle. It is well-balanced and allows the tension to build continuously. It's a journey of self-discovery for Mulder, that was only hinted on in the show. That makes me even more glad, that this fic exists to fill in the missing pieces. archiveofourown.org/works/45635656

  • Shadows and Light by xxSKSxx

Mulder and Scully arrive in a small rural town to look into a ghost sighting. Their journey takes them to an eerie, abandoned cabin in the middle of the forest. As they delve deeper into the mysteries of the cabin and the strange noises they hear, they find themselves confronting their own beliefs and fears. As a long-time reader of X-Files fanfic, I have always greatly enjoyed the captivating stories that the many, many talented writers in this fandom have written about our favorite agents. Writing fanfic is a journey I never thought I’d take. I’m both excited and scared. But here goes nothing, so here’s my very first fanfic. I hope reading it will give you at least a fraction of the joy I had writing it. Thank you so much for reading. I hope you enjoyed my little fic. And if you want to comment, please feel free. You'd make my year—just be kind. archiveofourown.org/works/49158790
