  • Vox Mulder: Fired and Wired by Darwin_xf

When did the rash, brash, solipsistic, arrogant Agent Mulder quit his ditching and bitching ways and morph into the attuned, sensitive, generous, still gorgeous guy who wooed and won Scully (a-gain) years later? What if the giving started with a donation? Seasons 6&7. Replaces the Amor Fati Trilogy. Just in case anyone’s in the mood for some GREAT fic today. You won't be sorry to have chosen this fantastic piece of storytelling! When I got the story alert that Darwin_xf had updated this fic I felt like my birthday had come early this year. I decided to do a whole reread instead of just reading the new chapter to experience the complete joy of getting lost in this story once again. And it was well worth it. This story is as wonderful, as magical, as spellbinding as I remembered it. From the setting in Hawaii to the intriguing three-dimensional secondary characters to the way they've interwoven the episode canon in the story. These Mulder and Scully are the same familiar characters and at the same, they're... more, different—like there’s a secret layer that’s been revealed. Beautiful. The use of symbolism and mood was incredibly nuanced and beautiful, and I can't imagine how much thought they must have put into writing all the plot lines. I think it's the way they used words like musical instruments to create the atmosphere, the emotions, the characters that struck and stayed with me the most. It's like reading a composition. They’ve certainly a way with words! Gorgeous. When I came across this description of Mulder’s energy in this story I had to include it in my comment as I feel it expresses precisely the journey both of them went on: As active as his mind often was, he had a quiet body. Warm and solid, he anchored her, provided a refuge from the frenetic world they’d abruptly reentered. She’d been utilizing his body in space as a reference point for years. There's an underlying retrospective to their conversations with their “Hawaiian family” that struck me as well. I especially liked Bane’s almost philosophical approach to being Mulder and Scully’s “person”, their priest-like confident. His description of war and likening it to what they’ve been through made me pause and think for quite some time after reading that chapter. It is easy to get caught up in the moment, in surviving day to day and not see that there is going to be an end in some way or other. At the same time, Bane’s not perfect and he seemed to have made quite a few mistakes. And neither is his family. They are all written with shades of grey. I loved reading about them. This wonderful story has stayed with me from the first time I've read it and after rereading it that has certainly been reinforced. archiveofourown.org/works/14457993

  • Something to Talk About by suilven

He wished they could talk about this. They were bad at talking, had been actively bad at it for years now. His fault as much as hers. But they’d never had something so big to not talk about. Bringing this back for anyone looking for some MSR that starts a bit angsty and turns into a sweet ending. archiveofourown.org/works/17812547

  • Felix Felicis – Book 2 by misslilli

Book 2 follows Mulder, Scully and Felix as they adjust to their new dynamic as a family and the challenges they face with balancing work commitments, new relationships and other outside forces. Felix is back! If you loved book 1 as much as I did you won't want to miss out on this one. I've spent 10 minutes thinking about how much I want to send Diana on a mars expedition after reading this. I'm hooked on this fic — again. Just like with book 1 there's no escape — not that I would want to. Poor Felix for being used as a pawn, poor Mulder for being stuck in the middle and poor Scully for always getting the short end of the stick. Not poor Diana for using her son to play power games. archiveofourown.org/works/36878107

  • What happened? by Skinfull

The highs of celebrating the end of a case bring Mulder and Scully closer than ever before, but an injury resurfaces and pulls them apart. There’re a lot of great and very angsty amnesia fics out there. This one is a bit lighter and less angsty and just a great and fun read. archiveofourown.org/works/33144001

  • No Eddie van Blundht by Characteristically_Exuberant

This starts directly after the final scene of Small Potatoes when Mulder visits Eddie van Blundht in prison. A mix of angst and humour. UST and MSR. In case you haven't read any of Characteristically_Exuberant's fics I'd suggest you start right away. So good. They got me hooked on their work. After finishing “Pip” I wanted to read another of their stories — and I'm so glad I did. They have a wonderful way of writing them. I loved the angst and the non-communication during my favourite season 4 and the cancer arc. I also liked that they brought back Ellen and let them have some fun! I smiled right along with them. I really appreciated how they tackled the controversial handling of the sexual assault by van Blundht. I didn't think much about it when I watched it back in the 90s and I was appalled while rewatching it a few years ago. The way SA is handled is just very tone-deaf. They explained the issues wonderfully through Scully’s words. I found myself nodding along. Another wonderful work! archiveofourown.org/works/36990805

  • The Rains of Bimini by SlippinMickeys

How could he have known, when she walked into his office with her bad suit and her earnest smile, that she would be the last person he would ever love? You don’t always realize the momentous things as they’re happening, and so he’d needled her a little; without any thought to his lost sister, he’d used his snottiest big brother voice and accused her of spying. Her. His last, best love.  This post-revival fic is so good, I want to rec it for those who haven't read it yet. What an interesting idea and I loved the timeline they chose. I don't think I've read any fic before where they're in their 70s. I was wondering how far they’d take them back in the rain and they took it back to Oregon. What a contrast. I loved reading their dynamic and this whole beautiful concept of the rains. I'm very glad I decided to follow Mulder & Scully to The Rains of Bimini in SlippinMickeys wonderful fic. archiveofourown.org/works/35753056

  • Waldron Island by SisterSpooky1013

Visit beautiful Waldron Island: the vacation of your dreams. If you're in the mood for a case fic right out of a horror movie this is the story for you. Follow Mulder and Scully to Waldron Island in SisterSpooky1013's fic that had me reading until 2 am — I couldn't stop until the end. It's been a while since I've read a fic that captured me so much that I kept reading through the night. This fic had me hooked from start to finish.   What an amazing idea, what a wonderful execution. The horror element was so believable and scary I actually felt uneasy reading in my silent house late at night. There really wasn't a single moment where I wasn't at the edge of my seat. Amazing work! archiveofourown.org/works/36700006

  • Cold Is the Night & Next To You by the_eternal_optimist

Mulder convinces Scully to join him on a hunt for a cryptid in the dead of a Wyoming winter. Trapped in the cold of a snowstorm, he learns that Scully has been distant for a reason. What a premiere fic from this writer! They captured Mulder and Scully beautifully in this phase of their partnership. I like it a lot that their Mulder is a bit more self-reflected and communicative than the Mulder in the show in early season 6. He's the supportive friend again he was in season 4 and early season 5. And Scully being her stubborn self and being fine — spot on! I'm looking forward to reading more fics from them in the future if they want to keep writing. I certainly hope so! Great work! A trip to the forest. A promise from Mulder to stay out of trouble. A handsome park ranger who's absolutely in love with Scully. And once more they captured Mulder and Scully’s dynamic beautifully. his no-nonsense attitude practically begging Mulder to interrupt That made me chuckle: and that means no mentions of the wampus cat or scarfinger—”“Spearfinger,” he corrected. And their closeness and no personal space behaviour is there as well: Scully turned and pressed a palm to Mulder's chest, shooting him a firm look. I'm always amazed how many talented writers are in this fandom & then someone new posts their VERY FIRST fic & it blows me away all over again. Welcome the_eternal_optimist! What an entry! • The Boy on the Beach by cecily_sass

One moment she was sitting in the chair. Her chin up, her expression ice. And the next moment she was gone. No one had to tell Mulder something had gone wrong. No one had to tell him the difference between having Scully and lacking Scully. In that distinction he was expert. This fic is simply amazing. The Boy on the Beach by cecily_cass is a whole experience—wonderfully plotted, beautifully set up, and gorgeously fleshed out. I’m constantly torn between wanting to know what happens next, while hoping it never ends. I wish I could write an eloquent and thoughtful comment but I honestly can't think of any words to describe how affected I am by this story. I knew it would be fantastic as I’m an avid reader of their work so I was looking forward to reading it as soon as the weekend was here. But I didn't expect to get THIS caught up in it. The build-up in the present timeline (1999), Mulder’s interpretation of the dream and Scully’s role in it, the time jump to 1973 and Scully’s handling of this colourful far-away world — it's all so beautifully set up and plotted. No matter where they take us, I'm equally excited to stare over Mulder’s shoulder at the polaroids, sit (virtually) next to Scully in that 70s Greyhound bus, cower with the Mulder children in a tree, or listen to obsessive, single-minded Mulder and disillusioned Scully after Amor Fati. All those little moments, the people getting out of 1968 cars and their clothes and hairstyles, overheard conversations that seem to be straight from reality, and all in a delicate timeline woven together to hit all the important dates in the present and the past — how much research did they put into all those details! And it's with all those layers — harmless conversations between random strangers that have a double meaning to Scully and give the whole story another invisible timeline on top. This story is a whole experience — wonderfully plotted, beautifully set up, gorgeously fleshed out by cecily_sass’ writing style and word choices, breathtakingly action packed, and heartbreakingly paced to keep us readers at the edge of our seats, hoping to learn what happens next while also hoping it never ends. What more can I say than thank you for taking me on this ride! What a gorgeous piece of writing! archiveofourown.org/works/38427268

  • Gates of Hell by alienqueequeg

In the first case after her remission from cancer, Scully is forced to confront a disturbing time in her past. Ten bodies are found buried outside an abandoned hospital in Northern California, all desecrated in a way that is reminiscent of horrifying medical experiments that took place there almost fifty years ago. While navigating the complexities of a changing relationship, Scully and Mulder work to uncover a long-buried evil and hope to solve a cold case that has haunted Scully for years. If you haven't read “Gates of Hell” by alienqueequeg run, don't walk. A horrifying case that had me at the edge of my seat and wonderful Mulder/Scully banter that made me smile all the way through—I couldn't stop reading. This is so good. The atmosphere is its own character and I love how they connected Scully to the case and made it personal. I have to say I felt quite sorry for Ellen. She was only in one chapter but her fear was portrayed so vividly. Poor girl, what a way to go. And the way they set up Mulder and Scully makes me smile a lot. Mulder being preoccupied and oblivious and flirty, Scully debating internally and believing more than she lets on and being jealous to her own chagrin — I'm loving it all. So them. What a wonderful fic. The last chapters had me on the edge of my seat — I couldn't put it down. Full of suspense, interesting characters, a well-thought-out plot, Mulder and Scully and their banter is spot on and the writing is amazing. Reading this fic was a true treat! archiveofourown.org/works/27897124
